The Field Trip to the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
At 8 AM on Saturday, 7 February 2004, a group of Fulbrighters boarded a bus for a trip to Coolidge, AZ, the locale of the Casa Grande Ruins NM. Dr. Matthew Whittaker (ASU Professor of History) presented a well-received lecture to the group about African American History in Arizona, covering, among other topics within the overall subject, the "Buffalo Soldiers" and black cowboys.
The "Big House," now protected from the elements under a over-arching roof, is one of the largest extant adobe structures in the New World. It is the only building remaining from the Hohokam culture that farmed the Gila and Salt River valleys ca. 1000-1100 AD. At the height of their culture, the Casa Grande was the centerpiece of a Hohokam city of an estimated 10,000 people. Aerial photographs of the region around the Casa Grande reveal the town and structural sites, and the irrigation canals, of this early Arizona − more geographically proper: "Northern Sonora" − culture.
