The Arizona Chapter

of the Fulbright Association

Welcome Dinner -- 6 September 2007

Nearly 60 persons attended the welcome dinner for Arizona Fulbrighters held at the UA Student Memorial Union on Thursday, September 6. This year, UA has 60 visiting Fulbright students and three Visiting Fulbright scholars. Most were in attendance, along with American Fulbright Alumni.

Joanne Lagasse-Long, UA Director of International Students, led the group in an exercise designed to acquaint Fulbrighters with one another. Each person told a story about him/herself and then each table nominated one person to share his/her story with the group. Included in the stories was one about how UA Fulbright student Mohammed Nasar met his American wife Jennifer. Mohammed was Jennifer's Arabic teacher. Jennifer knew from the first time she met Mohammed that she would marry him. She joked with her friends that she would offer his father, who is Jordanian, 30 camels for him. When the time came, she made her offer, and Mohammed's father counter offered saying that five camels were enough.

Following this exercise and dinner, Carol Bender, Chapter President made some brief remarks on the importance of Senator Fulbright's original vision of cultivating global understanding through cultural and educational exchange. She then shared information about the activities the Chapter will offer this year with support from the Enrichment Grant we have received from the State Department.
