Mini-bio for Carol Bender  

Carol Bender has been the director of the Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP) at the University of Arizona (UA) since 1989. UBRP, established in 1988, teaches students science by providing them with paid research experience in UA scientists' laboratories. The program supports more than 140 students per year and has achieved international recognition. She also directs the Biomedical Research Abroad! Vistas Open (BRAVO!) Program that sends experienced UBRP students abroad to do research related to the work they do at UA. Carol has authored or co-authored a number of publications about UBRP and BRAVO! and has presented at regional, national, and international conferences. She has been a consultant to the Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt and to the University of Aguascalientes in Aguascalientes, Mexico. As a result of her involvement in international activities, she was a Senior Fulbright Scholar (International Education Administrator) in Japan in 1997. In 2000, she was one of 32 recipients nationwide of the Millennium International Volunteer Award given by the US State Department for her efforts to promote international understanding. The University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, the Czech Republic, awarded her a medal of honor in 2003 in recognition of her activities to promote international student exchange. Carol currently serves as president of the Arizona Chapter of the Fulbright Association.
